Here at Magnet, we have a variety of clubs for students to participate in. From hosting activities outside of school to meetings within, just one club can make a big difference! Of course, Club Fair was earlier in the year, but with all these amazing clubs it is certain that some didn’t catch all the attention they deserve. In an effort to combat this, Club Spotlight is a series for bringing awareness to different clubs at Magnet that you might not know about! Additionally, it is important to acknowledge the efforts and accomplishments that your fellow Raptors have dedicated their time working toward. Follow along to learn about what clubs at Magnet are doing- you may even find a new one to join!
Featured in this edition of Club Spotlight is the AMHS Cancer Outreach Club, co-founded and led by seniors Peyton Johnson, Calvin Volkmann, Quinn Swanton, and Hunter Kuhnell. Good friends from their time spent running XC together, these seniors have worked hard to raise over $1,500 in funds to help support local charities and organizations centered around cancer research, prevention, and patient support. A most notable achievement for the club was a particular bake sale where they raised a total of $750- the highest total from an in-school bake sale that Mrs. Knox claims she has ever seen! On reaching their goal of $700, as promised, the club leaders shaved their heads in celebration of this monumental accomplishment. What a story! But that isn’t all they achieved; partnering with Lonon Foundation, Peyton and his club were able to package, and send, 40 gift boxes for children whose parents are undergoing cancer treatment. This kind gesture grants the children of parents suffering through chemotherapy and radiation some relief during such a strenuous time for them and their families. Other events the AMHS Cancer Outreach Club has participated in include the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night walk. This event is held to raise awareness and money for kids across America who are battling blood cancer. Finally, the club has also hosted a very successful dodgeball tournament here at the AMHS gym, attracting almost 100 spectators and 8 competitive teams. It seems this club has found ways to create some entertainment whilst raising money for a great cause with these creative ideas! Shoutout to everyone on the AMHS Cancer Outreach team for helping an abundance of children, both locally and nationally, receive the care and support they need during this difficult time.
Additionally, Peyton would like everyone to know they are welcome to join Cancer Outreach Club in the fight against cancer, and to email him at johpey8224@ccsdschools.com if you are interested! This club has aspirations of raising an additional $2,000 this year to set themselves up for future success. Since all current leaders are seniors, Peyton and his friends hope to inspire more Raptors to join, ensuring their club will live on at Magnet even after they graduate. This group meets in Mrs. Langley’s room every other Wednesday during lunch, so be sure to check it out if you get the chance!
