It’s getting chilly outside, so you know what that means- basketball season! This winter AMHS Women’s Basketball has a new team and they’re ready to get to work. With preseason starting back in September and conditioning in October, these girls have been busy preparing for the season. This year in particular will be a change from past years since both BE and Oceanside were rightfully removed from the 2A region. Now that tryouts are over and real practices have begun, both JV and Varsity are getting hyped for the season. Read along to meet the teams and hear about what the girls are excited for in the upcoming months!
First up, Junior Varsity. This year the JV team roster is: Abby Ross, Anita Meron-John, Beatrice Fennell, Devon Porter, Evie Hassid, Gillian Liegl, Nina Pistorius, Parker Blessinger, Sloan Miller, Tiffany Tatzel and Vivian Rachman. These girls range in ages, with the youngest Sloan still in 7th grade. As a result of new legislation, there can be players on Magnet teams from the School of the Arts. Sloan, Parker, Gillian, Anita, Nina, Vivian and Tiffani all attend SOA. The AMHS Women’s JV coach is the outgoing and fun Sarah Holl. She is super pumped to be coaching JV and is excited to see how the girls will work together this first year together. Best of luck to JV this season!
Now to meet your 24-25 AMHS Women’s Varsity team. On Varsity are girls from all four grades, starting with freshman Caryn Hasenberg and Sloane Bradley. These “bigs” are a staple for the team due to their much needed height and ability to put the ball back up on rebounds. Next up, sophomores are Suzette Head, Logan Taylor, Elle Fennell, Maddison Logan, Emma Nelson and Mia Dewey. Each girl brings a new skill to the program, from ball handlers Logan and Suzette to Mia and Emma down low. It is all of these players’ first year on the team and we are more than happy to welcome them. Next, the Juniors are Sienna Monning, Hayden Moody, Josie Barrineau, and Rowan Engelke. This is year two for all of these girls except for Sienna, who is spending a year here as an exchange student from Germany. Finally, the seniors include #4 Lindsey Griffin, #5 Evie Walldorf and #3 Sophia Benich. This will be Evie’s fourth year as a returning Varsity player and Lindsey and Sophia’s third. Senior Lindsey Griffin says she’s “really excited about this season because of all the new people coming into the program with so much energy.” Let’s hope Varsity girls can keep up the momentum and have a great season.
The AMHS Women’s Basketball head coach, and biggest fan, is none other than the legend himself– Steivie Jones. Known for his booming voice, outgoing personality, and large stature, Stevie is hard to miss. This is his sixth season coaching for Magnet and, despite his many efforts, he has yet to successfully sneak up on the team due to his infamously squeaky shoes. Assisted by Jessica Haynes, Coach says he is more than excited to see the chemistry between the girls on JV and Varsity, hoping they can pick up the pace for a functionally fast game of basketball. What he loves most about the teams is “how close everyone is and how supportive they are of each other.” Coach Stevie is ready for this season and wants readers to know: “If you want to see an exciting game, show up for the women’s games!”
