Are you an artist or writer here at Magnet? Do you want to showcase your works to the world? Would you like to contribute to a project to support local charities? If your answer to any of these questions is “yes,” consider joining the Creative Writing, Visual Arts, and Advocate Club’s joint art and writing project!
Our goal with this project is to curate a magazine full of AMHS students’ best art and writing works. If you are a member of any of the previously mentioned clubs, you may have heard about this project before. Additionally, you may have seen some of the flyers and posters we have hanging up around the school, as well as our advertisement on the TV screens. The project is open to students of any grade, whether or not you are a part of any of these clubs.
Currently, we are in the creation period of the zine – the time when contributors who want to make pieces for it have freedom to make their pieces. Submissions to the zine will open at the beginning of the second semester, in January, and run until the end of the month. After January 31, we will be unable to accept submissions due to time constraints, so please try to get in your works ASAP!
As for the kind of art that will be accepted into the zine, we are willing to take almost anything you can imagine. Some of the options we’ve come up with for artists are mediums such as traditional art (as long as it can be scanned to high quality!), digital art, and photography, while writers can submit anything from prose writing to short stories. If you’re an artist or writer and have a friend who is the opposite, feel free to collaborate with them on a submission! You can also get service hours for submissions – you can submit a maximum of 3 works, with 1 hour for each.
Each piece submitted to the zine should also focus on the specific theme of “finish lines and new beginnings.” Feel free to interpret this direction however you like, as long as you can justify it! However, to ensure proper sensitivity and respect to the other creators and patrons of the zine, we ask that you keep darker topics out of your submissions. We understand that this is a very vague response, so we’ll review submissions where people are concerned about darker topics on a case-by-case basis.
We will be producing a physical copy of this book to sell it to teachers and students, with the intention of donating every single cent of profit to the local charity Compass Harbor Housing Solutions. This charity aims to help youths who have aged out of foster care find homes, jobs, and opportunities for education. Founded by Paige Osbon before her unfortunate passing in 2020, the charity and its spirit is kept alive by her husband and dearest friends, including the rest of her family. As a relative of hers, this organization is very close to my heart, and the purpose of this project is to support all the wonderful things they do for kids who have aged out of the system. If you would like to learn more about Compass Harbor, their website can be found here.
If you have any interest in contributing to this project, please consider submitting your information to our interest check! The link to the interest check can be found here. Within the next few weeks, we will be sending out the link to join the Google Classroom where all of the information will be posted. If you have any other questions, please email me at osblil8774@ccsdschools.com.
