How do you celebrate the spooky season? For many, dressing up on Halloween for a fun night out or decorating a front lawn for trick-or-treaters to enjoy, is not the only way to get in the spirit. Jack O’Lanterns prove to be another popular activity for those wishing to unleash their creativity in a special design. From gruesome ghouls to sweet French Bulldogs, there is a wide variety of inspiration and lots of artistic freedom. To honor the wonderful tradition of carving pumpkins, take a look at a few of your fellow Raptors’ intricate creations!
Starting off strong, Charley Richards has created a chilling masterpiece that appears to resemble the main character Jack Skellington from A Nightmare Before Christmas. While it’s unclear if this was a part of the influence, Charley claims to have been “Inspired by Mrs. Yackey to make the pumpkin as happy as she always is.”
Next up are two impressively detailed pumpkins made by Katie Sheffield. Our AP Art star did not disappoint with these patterns of a butterfly and a deer. Katie has always been artistically inclined, and this is certainly a testament to her abilities!
Benjamin Fox shared an elaborate carving of his dog, complete with small freckles for added detail. He says this design took him almost two whole hours to complete, and I respect the dedication!
This next pumpkin, while it may look relatively ordinary at first glance, is particularly unique. Rather than carving it herself, Isabella Steele says that this Jack O’Lantern was actually pecked away by her chickens- how cool! It’s a mystery how she was able to get them to follow such a symmetrical pattern, so although the chickens are the masters behind the design, Isabella certainly deserves some credit.
Next up, Kinsey gave us some real showstoppers with these adorable creations. The carving of Stuart the Minion is a classic, complete with the logo and goggles. Then, of course, it’s hard not to laugh at the pooing dog. Well done, Kinsey!
For this next Jack O’Lantern, Sousa Waggoner made what appears to be a cat dressed as a witch concocting a potion- love the creativity! She says she was inspired by a Pinterest post and her love of cats, “especially Isla’s and Alden’s,” despite unfortunately being allergic to them herself.
One of my personal favorites, created by none other than Isla Todd, is this amazing 3D design. From the details of the mouth, shaving away the outer layer to make the teeth, to the pumpkin this Jack O’Lantern is chewing on, Isla really outdid herself.
Last but certainly not least, Hannah Collins shares her own spooky squash. While she says she isn’t quite sure what this design is of, it is still cool nonetheless. Thanks, Hannah!
All in all, there is some serious carving talent wandering the halls here at AMHS. If you haven’t gotten the chance to craft your own masterpiece this year, I would certainly recommend it for a fun fall activity. Thanks to everyone who submitted their Jack O’Lanterns for this article! I hope y’all have a Happy Halloween!!
