AP’s, or Advanced Placement, classes are an everyday occurrence for Magnet students. They can decide to take a few AP classes, or they can decide to take all AP’s (and all power to them). Over the past four years, I have taken 11 AP classes, and here’s what I think about each of them.
Now I am sure everyone knows this, but the one AP everyone is required to take their junior year is AP Seminar. I am so grateful to have taken this class because it truly does prepare you for AP Research. From knowing where to find good sources to understanding how to create alignment in your paper, I feel more confident walking into research this year as a senior.
While this next one was an elective, I would also recommend it to anyone who would listen. AP Psychology is such an interesting class, and personally I enjoyed the history side of it and learning about all the different people who have contributed to this field of study over the years. I am interested to learn about how the course has changed when the curriculum changed last year.
AP English Language is one of my favorite classes I have taken here at Magnet. It truly is the class for those who love to read, but it is also the class for those who love to prove their point. While the argumentative essay was definitely my favorite essay in the AP Exam, I also enjoyed being able to read amazing books like The Great Gatsby and The Grapes of Wrath.
Finally, senior year. AP Government has probably been one of the most interesting classes I have taken at Magnet. My favorite part has been learning about all the different cases, from Brown v Board to Gideon v Wainwright, and how they have affected legislation and shaped our country.
Another AP English class I am currently taking is AP English Literature. And while people usually say to take either AP English Language or AP English Literature because colleges usually only accept one of the credits, I am really glad I chose to take both. I am currently loving our unit of Shakespeare, specifically Macbeth.
Hot take, I love AP Statistics. I have never been good at math where you need to memorize formulas. With AP Statistics, I have been able to focus on understanding the concepts of math and have been able to succeed. I also find it so interesting how different points of data can affect all of the data, but you will need to just have to take statistics yourself to learn more.
AP Research, there is honestly too much to rave about. While I like AP Seminar, I love how AP Research allows you to tap into your creative side and research something you are really passionate about. The independent aspects of the class have allowed me to flourish and have tested my skills to the point that I am comfortable researching new topics and finding reliable information.
That is my hot take on each of the AP classes I have participated in at Academic Magnet High School. Make sure to check out Part 1 of Reviewing AP Classes to see what other classes I have taken.
