Academic Magnet is known for its excellence in academics, but it is also well known that we also produce some amazing athletes too. This article contains 4 students, those students being Jack Troy, Alaina Jarrett, Chloe Trowman, and Akiera Sanchez. Two of these four have committed to college for their athletic excellence, those being Jack Troy to Arizona State and Alaina Jarrett to Tennessee. The other two, Chloe Trowman and Akiera Sanchez were both invited to compete from Academic Magnet for North Versus South Games, and are both the first in their sports to be invited from Academic Magnet High School.
Jack Troy- After a recent commitment to Arizona State University for swimming this past month, Jack Troy is best known for his swimming abilities, mainly in backstroke, IM, and freestyle. Jack had a great summer and placed 2nd and 3rd in the 100 and 200 backstroke at futures and saw massive drops through the Long Course season. The boys swimming team, led by Jack, as well as Joey Shadey and Sawyer Quartermous saw crazy times that led the Academic Magnet to get runners up to Greer Middle College. Troy posted times of 22.3 50 back on the relay, 1:51.46 in the 200IM getting 2nd, and 20.26 in the 50 freestyle anchoring the relay to come back to win.
And a 48.43 in the 100bk getting 1st breaking the high school record set in 2019 by over a second. Troy had his best times in all of his events and is looking forward to building on this throughout the season when he has championship meets in December and March. Jack currently holds 2 different state records, the most recent being his time of 57.23 in the 17/18 boys 100m Backstroke, and the other coming from 2018 when he, with the help of Owen Frits, Luke Green, and Ivan Wilson got a time of 4:16.13 in the 13/14 Medley relay. Jack Troy also mentioned that he is looking forward to meeting all his teammates and to being a Sun Devil, who are best known for their swimming and diving team. Jack also mentioned how he is looking forward to the weather, business school, and school spirit. ASU just had 4 athletes from the swimming and diving team compete in the Olympics, those being Tiago Behar representing Switzerland, alumni Max McCusker representing Ireland, and incoming freshman Tolu Young representing Fiji, and Illyka Khaurn who won two bronze medals at Paris.
*This is Jack getting second at futures championship in Richmond!
Alaina Jarrett- Alaina Jarrett is a star Volleyball player, and has been committed to the Tennessee Volunteers since her junior year. She is known for her ability to executing “kills” at the net, with a crazy kill per set count at 2.8. Among this, according to max preps, she leads the team in total blocks with 46 blocks, digs per set with 2.4, serving aces with 66 serving aces, aces per set with 0.9 aces per set, digs with 184 digs, kills with 215, and receptions with 245 receptions all during this season so far. Alaina has been a member of the varsity volleyball team for almost 4 years, which started when she was brought up to the team midway through freshman year. Senior Men’s captain Mercer Bundis says about her, “She is really good at getting kills”. He also remarks on the fact that she occasionally helps out at the boy’s volleyball practices in almost a coach’s role to help teach them what to do. His exact quote for this was,” She isn’t exactly like a coach when she helps us out, instead the coaches use her as like playing against somebody who is just of a higher caliber than our entire team. If you would like, al of her highlights are posted for each game at https://www.hudl.com/profile/15520773/Alaina-Jarrett
Chloe Trowman- Chloe is a leading member of our girls’ tennis team. She has been on the varsity team for all 4 years and has been a captain of the team since her junior year. Her freshman year, Chloe won the award for “All Low-Country Honorable Mention”, was a nominee for the Hoffman Award her sophomore year, and was crowned the two-time MVP of the Varsity Women’s tennis team both her sophomore year and her junior year at Academic Magnet. Recently, she was just selected for the SCACA Women’s Tennis North-South Selection tournament and was the first tennis player at Magnet to be selected for a north versus south game.
Akiera Sanchez- Akiera Sanchez is our number 1 golfer on the AMHS Women’s golf team. She has been on the varsity team for all four years and has led the team to multiple accomplishments. On top of this, she was invited to be in the North-South women’s golf tournament for the Carolinas and is the first AMHS golfer to be selected for this tournament. She is the teams most valuable player(MVP) and routinely finishes in the top 10 in competitive tournaments. According to the PKB Girls Golf Tour, she also scores par more than 50% of the time, and scores better than par about 10% of the time. She also mentioned she finished 3rd in the women’s golf tournament Charleston Classic, and over the summer finished 2nd place in another tournament she competed in.
Good luck to all of our very talented magnet athletes and to all those other unnamed athletes who are accomplishing things behind the scenes! This is also only part 1 since there are more athletes I could not include accomplished Raptor athletes on this list, so look forward to another one of these.
