Why Clemson Fans Should Be Ready for Their Pizza Party

Ben Auten, Staff Writer

After Clemson’s 56-41 victory over North Carolina State 2 weeks ago, Tigers Head Coach Dabo Swinney promised Clemson fans a pizza party if Clemson makes the College Football Playoff. After knocking off conference rival Florida State and surviving a scare from Syracuse, the 10-0 Tigers are just a mere three wins away from securing their place in the second College Football Playoff. However, these three games won’t be easy and Clemson has a growing target on its back every week.

First, upset-minded Wake Forest comes to Death Valley hoping to shock the college football world with a win on the road over the top ranked team in the country. While the Demon Deacons could give Clemson an early scare, this Tigers team has shown their experience and maturity throughout the year and I fully expect Swinney’s group to win on Senior Night. Then, comes the Palmetto Bowl, against in-state rival South Carolina. The Gamecocks have struggled all season, and will most likely come in with just a 4-7 record, but don’t expect Clemson to blow out South Carolina in Columbia. The greatest aspect of a rivalry is that the game on paper never seems to reflect how it actually plays out. On paper, the undefeated Clemson Tigers should dominate South Carolina from start to finish, and Clemson is clearly the more talented team. However, I expect the Gamecocks to put up a fight and hang around with this Tigers team, but ultimately Clemson will come out on top for the second year in a row. Clemson’s talent on the field, combined with Swinney’s uncanny ability to motivate his players will have them prepared and focused for this game and not the ones following it. I don’t think Dabo and his players have forgotten that 5 year winless stretch against South Carolina, and that will surely be on their minds as the Tigers march on toward the College Football Playoff. If all goes accordingly, #1 Clemson will then take on the North Carolina Tar Heels in the ACC Championship Game in Charlotte, NC. And if there’s a team that can derail Clemson’s road to perfection, its the Tar Heels. UNC lost its opener to South Carolina, but that remains the only blemish on the Tar Heels schedule. UNC has a high powered offense that put up 66 points against Duke two weeks ago and 59 against Miami last week. Also, the Tar Heels have a much improved defense from a year ago and they certainly have the talent on both sides of the ball to compete with Clemson regardless of how well the Tigers play. However, despite all that, I still believe Clemson will defeat UNC, or whomever they play in the conference championship game, go to 13-0, and be well on their way to a semifinal matchup in the Playoffs.

Therefore, that means pizza for 80,000 Clemson fans who show up to Memorial Stadium on December 6th! So, mark your calendars Tigers fans so you can enjoy some delicious pizza with 80,000 people also celebrating Clemson’s spot in the College Football Playoff, and a chance to win a National Title.

*Now, for your entertainment, some astounding facts about Dabo Swinney’s promise to Tiger fans:

-It would require 10,188 pizzas to feed a full house of Tiger fans at Death Valley (if every fan only got 1 slice), which stacked on top of each other would rise to 1,380 feet, 400 feet taller than the Eiffel Tower.

-If you combined the weight of Clemson’s five starting offensive lineman and multiplied it by 9.4, that would equal the amount of dough needed, in pounds, to make the 10,188 pizzas. Also, the weight times 4.9 for the amount of cheese and times 1.6 for the amount of pepperoni.

-At a local pizzeria in Clemson, it would cost Coach Swinney $152,000 to pay for all the pizzas.

-You would have to fill up 637 Gatorade coolers worth of sauce to equal the amount needed to make the pizza.

-On average, a large pizza can be made in 10 minutes by one person. That being said it would take 71 days to make the pizza if it was made one at a time.

Dabo should probably get to it if he truly wants to stay true to his promise because this is not an easy task, Tiger fans certainly don’t want to be let down, and Clemson doesn’t look like losing anytime in the near future.
