Pretty much every student has TikTok. It is the perfect way to kill time and de-stress after a long day of homework. There are so many different types of videos, some more popular than others. Trends come and go quickly on TikTok, but I’ve compiled a list of what I have found to be the most popular over the past few weeks.
Trending sounds play a big part in how well videos do. One of the biggest sounds right now is Maps by the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s (they don’t love you like I love you). There are two trends with this sound, one is a super easy dance that anyone can do and the other is with the face puzzle filter where people can have their features fall into place. These videos always put a smile on my face because of how simplistic they are. The song is also very catchy but not in an obnoxious way. These two trends together get a 9/10 ranking.
Another trending sound is ГЛАМУР or the glamour song. The song itself is in Russian so the lyrics are a little iffy, but most people recognize that the singer is talking about blondes and brunettes having glamour. Most videos under this sound have something to do with leopards or leopard print. I absolutely love this trend and think this aesthetic is the epitome of glamour. The song is so catchy and leaves me feeling like I just strutted down the catwalk. This trend is definitely a 10/10.
TikTok started as a dancing app so it’s only natural that a dance should be trending at all times. Right now, the biggest dance is the Natalie Nunn (baddies) trend. The dance itself is so easy to learn and most videos are filmed at 2x speed so it’s even easier to execute. This trend in one word is fun. I love love love it and I hope more like it come around soon! This trend is totally a 10/10 I could watch it for hours.
There are a plethora of trends that have been grouped together as being under the same genre: “Oh no no no no we’re not getting a dog don’t even think about it girl”, “Momma a girl behind you”, and “Donatella VERSACE💜.” There are literally millions of TikToks having to do with some variation of these phrases. I would say the funniest out of the three is probably “Momma a girl behind you” because of how cute the little girl is and how often I see the original video which makes me chuckle. This combination of trends is probably the oldest on this list and for that reason it loses some points, putting it at a 6/10 for me.
Edits have always been popular on TikTok, especially of TV show characters. With the release of the new show Monsters on Netflix, the editing community has been hard at work. The show itself has great music which editors have taken advantage of. If you haven’t had Blame It On The Rain stuck in your head at some point over the past couple of weeks I’d be shocked. These edits are super well done and seeing as the show is amazing this trend gets an 8/10 from me.
It has recently become a trend to draw mental illnesses. While this is nothing to joke about, TikTokers have twisted this idea to draw monsters that are obsessed with a certain type of food often viewed as gluttonous such as Taco Bell, Chick-fil-A, or Crumbl. These videos don’t usually make me laugh like some of the other ones listed here, but I do enjoy sending them to friends that I get that type of food with. However, with how mean-spirited this trend is I give it a 4/10.
Satirical trends are huge on TikTok. As of right now, that trend is still water. Still water is water that has been sitting for a long time, particularly in abandoned places, and can become a host for harmful bacteria like brain-eating amoeba. With this looming threat of still water being spread to many, people started making jokes about it saying things like toilets or puddles contained still water. I would say this is pretty funny but after a while gets a little annoying. There are only so many things people can claim to be still water and seeing unoriginal ideas is just a waste of time. This trend is a 5/10 for these reasons.
TikTok can also serve as inspiration for gifts! Now that we’ve entered the month of October, boo baskets have blown up. These are collections of cute little gifts, often Halloween-themed, that you can give to your friends, significant others, or even teachers to show appreciation for them! These baskets are so adorable and a really sweet way to let someone know you care about them. This trend is genuinely helpful in showing people what they should buy when assembling these gifts. This trend is 100% a 10/10 for its wholesome nature and practicality.
With the crazy drama following P-Diddy’s arrest and the conspiracy theories surrounding the situation, Beyoncé has a spotlight on her as people ponder her involvement within Diddy’s inner circle. People have been especially curious about the trend of Grammy-winning artists thanking Beyoncé for almost every award won. The running joke/theory is that if you don’t thank Beyoncé she will come for you. If you open any comment section, you’ll see dozens of users saying things like “I’d just like to take a minute to thank Beyoncé” or if something bad happened in the video they’ll say “It’s because they didn’t thank Beyoncé.” I happen to think this is pretty funny but seeing as it’s more of a thing for the comment section, I wouldn’t rate it as high as some of the other trends on this list, putting it at a 7/10. (But still thank you Beyoncé)
By far the funniest trend on TikTok right now is subtle foreshadowing. These videos are of something unfortunate but funny happening to someone, for example, falling down the stairs, where the climactic part of the video is shown as the rest is played until the actual moment happens. At first, I find myself laughing at the failure as I see it the first time, but then I get curious about how they even ended up in that position in the first place. If you haven’t seen one of these videos I would highly recommend searching them up because they are super funny. This trend definitely gets a 10/10 from me.
TikTok trends can come about so quickly and dissipate just as fast. It is sometimes very surprising what catches on and what doesn’t. And of course, everyone’s algorithm is different and people have different trends coming across their “For You” page. If I left any of your favorite trends out let me know and maybe a part two will be coming your way soon.
