This fall sports season has well lived up to the hype, and fans cannot get enough of it. There have been several impressive performances over the last two weeks. Athletes have delivered breathtaking plays that will leave fans in shock for years to come. There are some performances that stand above the rest though. These deserve recognition and remembrance for years to come.
Following his Super Bowl performance where he caught and threw a touchdown, people were expecting a breakout year from the 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings. That is exactly what he did against the Rams. Jennings hauled in 11 catches on 12 targets for 175 yards and 3 touchdowns. He became just the second player in 49ers franchise history to have 10 or more catches, 150 or more yards, and three or more touchdowns in a single game. Jennings had all of the 49ers touchdowns last Sunday. This equated to 46.5 fantasy points in a PPR league. Kyle Shanahan, the 49ers head coach, called Jennings a “warrior” on Sunday and stated how while the numbers were impressive, they did not tell the whole story. He stepped up big time for his team this week. The 49ers were missing two key offensive stars in running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receiver Deebo Samuel. These two are often the preliminary scorers for the 49ers offense, but Jennings proved he can also produce for this top offense. As McCaffrey’s injury is likely to put him out for a majority of the season, I expect Shanhan and the 49ers to target Jennings more this year than in years past after this high production game.
In what many consider the be the greatest single game performance, Shohei Ohtani cements himself in baseball history as being the first player in the 50/50 club. The Dodgers met the Marlins September 9 in Miami. Ohtani’s performance during this game can be described as nothing short of superhuman. He had a truly insane stat line, 6-for-6 with three home runs, four runs scored, two doubles, two stolen bases and 10 RBI. Before the game Ohtani had 49 stolen bases, and 48 home runs. With his 3 homers and 2 stolen bases against the Marlins, Ohtani became the first player in MLB history to have a 50/50 season. That means that Ohtani has hit 50 home runs and stolen 50 bases. These feats alone are impressive, but together they are superhuman. He also set the single season home run record for Dodgers, which had been previously held by Shawn Green at 49. Before Thursday, no MLB player had even had multiple home runs and multiple stolen bases in a game since Mookie Betts in 2021. He and Ohtani are the only Dodgers to do this since at least 1901. Perhaps the craziest stat from this game is that since RBI became official in 1920, only one MLB player has had, over the course of his entire career (same game or not),a game with 10+ RBI, a game with 6+ hits, a game with 5+ XBH, a game with 3+ HR, a game with 2+ SB. This one player is Shohei Ohtani. He did it all against the Marlins. It seems that the massive $700 million contract was well worth it. This will be the first year that we get to see Ohtani in the playoffs, which is just another reminder about how bad the Angels were.
Another week, another outstanding performance from Travis Hunter. These kinds of performances from him are becoming the norm, but his clutch play on the goal line against Baylor cemented himself as a CFB legend. Coming off a tough loss from Nebraska, Colorado was looking to bounce against a mid Baylor team. It was a back and forth game that came down to the wire. The score was 31-24 with Baylor on top, when Shedeur Sanders, Colorado’s quarterback, chucked a hail mary to the 2 yard line. Although it hit the receiver in the chest it was dropped and the Buffs had one more chance to tie the game. Sanders hiked the ball and rolled out to his left and let it fly. LaJohntay Wester caught the pass 43 yards downfield in the end zone. The extra kick was good and the game was going to overtime. After Colorado scored in overtime, Baylor needed to score to go to double OT. They marched the ball down to the Buffs two yard line. On the last play of the game they handed the ball off to Dominic Richardson. Travis Hunter met him at the goal line and forced a fumble to seal the game. Fans rushed the field before the referees even called the game, but the fumble was good and Colorado won a thriller on their homecoming weekend. Astonishingly, Hunter still is not the favorite for the Heisman. He is the tenth overall favorite with his odds at +2500.
During Week 4 of the NFL season the Ravens met the Bills in a primetime Sunday Night Football matchup. The Bills were undefeated going into this game, while the Ravens were looking to add another W to their record. And that is exactly what they did on Sunday. They had a dominant performance against the Bills led by Derrick Henry. Every week he seems to beat the washed allegations as this week he puts up another impressive stat line. He rushed for 199 yards and 1 touchdown. He also had 3 receptions for 10 yards and another touchdown threw the air. This performance was marked by a 87 run early in the first quarter which Henry took to the house. This is now the longest run in Ravens history. Henry was close to breaking another impressive record Sunday night as well. He was 1 rushing yard shy of having the most 200 rushing yard games in NFL history. He is tied for first right now with 6.
These amazing performances will definitely still retain their aura and intrigue after the season is long over. But it is still early in the year, and with the NBA starting up soon I am sure there will be many impressive plays in the near future. I, as a sports fan, cannot wait to see what other amazing performances we will witness this year.
