Our Magnet fall sports are gearing up for another exhilarating season of ups and downs, championships, and Raptor pride. We went around campus and interviewed players on the Men’s Football Team, Varsity / JV Girls Tennis Squads, Men’s Swim Team, and Varsity / JV Girls Volleyball. Season predictions, favorite team traditions, exciting underclassmen, and more in this article!
Swim:
Captains Sawyer Quertermous (12)- Sprint Free, Br, Fly Jack Troy (12)- IM, Bk, Fr. to ask them a few questions about the upcoming swim season. Jack and Sawyer said they are both looking forward to the first meet of the season against Bishop England, Long-time rivals of the team. Following that meet they said they have a pretty fun lineup of meets coming up with Sawyer predicting an undefeated season. Jack lent some insight saying this season is going to be a bit of a rebuilding year due to the seniors that graduated last year. Sawyer commented that they left some pretty big shoes to fill but we are looking forward to carrying on their leadership.
Ian Claire (9) – Ian Claire is a first-year swimmer for Magnet, and he is bringing new talent to the team. He’s looking forward to the first meet against Bishop England on August 22nd saying “ I’m not going into it with the sink or swim mentality, I’m ready to put everything on the line!” We’re happy to see such raptor pride going into the coming season. Best of luck to you Ian!
Girls Tennis:
Talia Barsness(12)– Talia is most looking forward to being a leader on the team and their secret sister tradition. However, the glowing aura around making it to state championships is what is igniting Talia the most. Talia also mentioned how there is some exciting underclassman talent who are already on the varsity team! So raptors, make sure you keep an eye out on Talia’s season and the whole team as a whole.
Eliza(9)– Eliza is looking forward to her first season as a Raptor athlete hoping to “ light up” the courts. She said she plays singles and is excited about the ups and downs of the upcoming season.
Football:
Keaton Murray(12)– Keaton Murray is looking forward to having a pretty strong season. He says last year was a great season and he is looking forward to “weakening and meakening” the opposition. Murray will be dabbling with both the offensive and defensive sides of the game. Murray says he is excited about some “canine aggressive modifier techniques” the team has been working on. He commented on how he is looking forward to the upperclassmen helping initiate the younger players, support them, and lead them to a winning season. Murray said that the past years seniors have made huge marks on the team and he is looking forward to creating his mark on the field. I think we all are looking forward to watching what Murray can bring to the field and see what these “canine aggressive modifier techniques”entail.
Judd Waggoner(9)– Judd is a first-year football player who is looking forward to a fun season and hopefully some playing time along with that. He plays wide receiver and says that the upperclassmen in the same position are role models for him. One question we asked him was GS or TD, Judd being the hungry athlete that he is, chose TD. Best of luck to you and your many TDs Judd!
Women’s Volleyball:
Alaina Jarret and Evie Waldorf (12)- Evie and Alaina are most anticipating playoffs, secret sister, and their newfound leadership on the team as seniors. The biggest games of the season are versus Phillip Simmons on September 17th and October 3rd respectively, which the pair urge everyone to attend. Evie claims she’s not worried at all about the Iron Horses, and that the team will do great.
Tenzen(9)– Tenzen is another first-year Raptor athlete on the JV Volleyball team, she is eager to get started with the upcoming season. She thinks she can bring a positive attitude and good sportsmanship to the team. She said that she has found the upperclassmen to be role models for her and they will hopefully have a lot of tips to share. Tenzen is also looking forward to the highly anticipated game against Philip Simmons. Good luck Tenzen!
During the time this article was being made, games were played, meets were won, and raptor pride was shown. Some highlights throughout the week was the men’s swim team’s win against their rivals Bishop England, the final score being 89-81. Last Friday we had our first football game and both the Raptors on the field and in the stands did not disappoint! While we didn’t bring home a win, the student section and spirit leaders showed up and showed out. Both the JV and Varsity volleyball teams brought home big wins against Ashely Ridge! The Tennis team just had their first match, we couldn’t make it to the game but we heard it was a good one! However, part of it had to be delayed due to darkness. In addition to this. As we close out the third week of school we have had our first two athletes of the week! The first of which being swimmer Sawyer Quertermous(12), and the second of which being cheerleader Caroline Maiden(10)! If you are newer to the school every week Coach Knauer presents a medal to one AMHS athlete, nominated by coaches, and names them the Raptor athlete of the week. In the sports section, we are looking forward to keeping you guys updated on the recipients.
