When I mentioned to a crowd of people that I would be watching the movie fight club, I was met with pure excitement. People responded with better than good reviews and I was beyond excited to crack open amazon prime and get to watching. My dad actually claimed that this was the best plot twist he’d ever seen in a movie, my hopes were immediately sky high. Although I would not personally grant this twist top spot, the movie did excel my alternate expectations and one I would watch again.
Characters: 10/10
The character depth was unbelievable. I noticed mid film that I knew everything about this character except for his first name. The plot dug deep into his issues with depression and insomnia, where he would not sleep at night but succumb to his tiredness at random points in the day. We learned that this character needed a coping mechanism of which he found in support groups. He would attend groups that did not apply to him whatsoever, but, these groups would help him truly experience emotions and most importantly cry. Marla’s appearance inhibited his ability to process these emotions as she would appear at each group meeting he was at. At the beginning and end of the movie, the narrator would make it clear that everything happened at the fault of Marla’s appearance at these meetings. Marla’s character was easily unlikable, but in my perspective, definitely not at fault for the ending of the movie. Another aspect of the movie that was of interest was the narrator’s ability to keep the audience on his side. We rooted for him as he participated in a club that incited violence, and this was partly because we saw him as the sidekick. Tyler Durden was the true mastermind of the plan and thus the scapegoat to the entire operation. What makes the narrator’s actions so critical to the plot is how his behavior is contrasted against Tyler Durden, this is until he begins to act and speak like Tyler.
Plotline: 9/10
I will say, the plot line is extremely clever, revealing parts of the plot twist as the movie moves forward. Moreover, I believe that I would pick up on many more hints in the story if I were to rewatch it, making the experience only better. I expect that this is a type of movie that you only fully understand once you have watched it two or three times. What makes this fact so special is that no attention whatsoever is brought to these hints that Tyler and the narrator are the same person. Who would of thunk?! To me, the story moved at the perfect pace where at first you did not quite know how the title related to the story. However, everything comes into perspective the moment Tyler Durden enters the picture. The “fight club” plot line becomes very clear, and can I say very different from what I expected entirely from this movie. Originally, I believed that it was a boxing movie, and I am so glad it wasn’t. My reviews were only up from there when I learned that the movie truly had a well thought out plot. My only complaint is how the movie turned somewhat sci-fi/unrealistic at the end.
Overall I enjoyed the movie and would recommend it! 9.5/10.
