11 Important Volleyball Tips for Buff Puff

On November 6th, the male population of AMHS is set to battle in a tournament of intense volleyball games. The event will be similar to Powder Puff, but without the football and the ponytails. There will be 8 teams of 6 that play a series of matches where only the winner moves on. At the end, the winner out of the male teams will face off against your AMHS Girls’ Varsity Volleyball Team. You only have to pay $5 to watch or participate. To ensure victory for your Stud Muffin team, please refer to the following list of tips.

  1. Warm up and stretch before your game. Volleyball demands vigorous physical activity, so make sure your muscles are ready (you boys may want to get in some conditioning beforehand if possible).
  2. Wear kneepads. In order to win you will have to throw yourself to the ground to dig out your opponents’ hits. Kneepads are essential to protecting your knees against the painful impact of the gym floor.
  3. Practice your approach. The key to a good hit is a well-timed approach. Left, right-left for right-handed people and right, left-right for left handed people. This will take some practice, so you Stud Muffins should start practicing ASAP.
  4. Wear stretchy shorts, preferably spandex, to ensure a wide range of motion. The stretchier the shorts, the easier it will be to achieve success.
  5. Keep your eye on the ball. Don’t be this girl: vballgirl
  6. To block, jump as high as you can with your hands in the air. If you’re lucky the ball will hit your hands.
  7. Communicate with your team when passing. Make sure to “call your splits;” that’s volleyball lingo for calling the ball when it’s between two people.
  8. Pass the ball with your forearms, not your fists.
  9. Some of you might not know your own strength and pass the ball a little too high. So, if the ball hits the ceiling, keep playing.
  10. Over and in. Make sure your serves get over the net and and in bounds. If you are not confident in your jump serve, you might want to consider an underhand serve.
  11. Have fun! And don’t get too upset if you make it to the finals, only to lose to your amazingly talented Girls’ Varsity Volleyball Team.
