This Monday, the AMHS Athletic Department hosted the First Annual Raptor Golf Classic. The event amassed over 13,000 dollars in fundraising money to support Raptor Athletics. The event welcomed 57 golfers and auctioned 40 items for a total of $5,500. Hosted at the Links at Stono Ferry, the tournament allowed for parents, teachers and friends to enjoy a day of golf in great weather, meanwhile supporting a good cause.
I participated along with Cole Davis, Wilson Burns, and my dad. Finishing in last place, we shot one under par. We were thrilled with this result, just to check to see that we finished dead last by 4 shots to the closest team. Despite the loss, the team was happy to skip school to play golf despite the result.
Coach Knauer, as head of the athletic department, was important in bringing this event back to Magnet. It was once a yearly tradition at Magnet, something Coach Knauer would like to bring back annually. He states about the tournament: “It was great to see the Raptor Golf Classic return to Magnet. All of the credit for the event’s success goes to the Booster Club and the committee led by Mrs. Taylor (’27p). The planning, organization, and execution of the event that took place before the event easily stretches into the hundreds of hours. The committee’s commitment and drive made it both successful for the Booster Club and an enjoyable experience for those that participated. Because of the overall positive feedback we’ve received, I imagine the Golf Classic will be back for good. However, most enjoyable to me, personally, was seeing current students and staff enjoying themselves at the event.” Thank you Coach Knauer for your help to organize this event.
Parent volunteer and leader described the challenging yet rewarding process of organizing the event. Mrs. Kat Taylor said that the tournament began to be planned in advance before Christmas time. Due to the fact that the idea was new, there was nothing to copy from prior years giving “the unique experience of starting from scratch.” Challenges included finding a venue, building a website, and getting the word out. She wanted to thank the AMHS community due to their generosity, support, and help in planning. Thank you to the parent volunteers that selflessly improved Academic Magnet athletics through fundraising.
Hope you attend next year to support AMHS athletics!
