SAVE Safe Schools Week
SAVE (Students Against Violence Everywhere) club came to Academic Magnet last year. Founded by Mr. Weart in 1989, aims to create schools that are safe, free of fear, secure, and conducive to learning. It all started at West Charlotte High School in North Carolina where Mr. Weart was teaching and coaching baseball. One of his players, Alex Orange, was killed trying to break up a fight at a party. His grieving classmates decided to start SAVE in honor of Alex’s memory. In twenty-six years, SAVE has expanded from just one chapter to over 2,200 chapters across the United States. SAVE’s colors are orange and purple. Orange standing for Alex Orange and Purple is the universal color of nonviolence. The organization is run by students for students.
Every year SAVE participates in Safe Schools Week. This year it will be October 19-23 and students at Academic Magnet are encouraged to participate in the following dress-up days this week:
Monday- Wear sunglasses because “your future is too bright, you don’t need to fight”
Tuesday- Wear your shirt/jacket backwards to “turn our backs on violence”
Wednesday- Wear orange to celebrate National SAVE day
Thursday- Bring a stuffed animal for a “safety buddy”
Friday- Wear pajamas to “put violence to rest”
SAVE meets on Tuesday B days at lunch in Ms. Novinger’s room so come check it out!
