Charleston HEART Comes to Magnet

Charleston is a city full of artists, musicians and general creativity. There are dozens of day programs for kids across the low country, but until the summer of 2014 there were few of these opportunities for adults with special needs. It was out of this need that the HEART organization was born. HEART stands for Holistic Education and Art Recreation Therapy, and aims to help exceptional adults continue to grow and develop after high school through a diverse curriculum. This nonprofit was founded by Farrah Hoffmire, a certified yoga teacher and holistic health coach. Through the organization, participants create art, go on nature walks, learn about health and fitness, and engage in many other activities which help to foster both growth and general quality of life.

Each 6 week session at HEART has a different theme, with local artists who help participants discover their creative sides. Every session ends with a community art show, where visual pieces are shown and a stage performance is put on. Entry prices to the shows are based on a sliding scale, which means you can attend no matter what your money situation may be. The last show was on October 23rd and had a spooky Ghostbusters theme and complimentary pizza and sodas for all who attended. Even if you missed this, you won’t have to wait much longer to participate in this awesome cause. The next show is set to take place on December 11th from 6 to 7pm and the theme is yet to be announced.

Recently, the students of Ms. Callicott’s art classes teamed up with HEART participants to create art. Check out the pictures below or visit http://www.heartsc.org/ for more information.
