What is chamoy??? According to Wikipedia, Chamoy is a variety of savory sauces and condiments made from pickled fruit in Mexican cuisine. Lately, the Chamoy Pickle Kit craze has been taking over TikTok. A TikTok Shop Chamoy Pickle Kit consists of Salsagetti (spaghetti-shaped sour gummy candy), Fruit Gushers, Fruit Roll-Ups, Takis/Hot Cheetos, flavor powders, flavor sauces, and of course, the big Chamoy Dill pickle. Now you may be thinking, Lauren, that sounds absolutely disgusting and I agree, but some of my friends were curious enough to try it for themselves.
The only thing on Suzanna Carlsten’s Christmas List this year was a Chamoy Pickle Kit, so when it came time for Secret Santa, her friend knew exactly what to get for her. As soon as she opened her gift she knew exactly what it was and everyone could tell how excited she was to indulge in the Chamoy Pickle.
The first step of creating the Chamoy Pickle is to drain the neon red pickle juice out of the bag and carve a tunnel into the pickle so that there is room to stuff the toppings in. From the moment Suzanna touched the Chamoy Pickle I knew her hands would be stained bright red for the rest of the night. I had never seen so much Red-40 in my whole life. Safe to say I was worried about what it would do to her insides. As soon as the pickle was carved, it was time to stuff the pickle with gushers, Salsagetti, Takis, and the flavoring sauces. A final touch to the pickle was to wrap a Fruit Roll-Up around the outside of it. Lily Thompson held high expectations for this pickle saying how she “[expeced] this to change [her] life and [she] thought it would be the best thing [she’d] ever eaten.” However, as soon as Lily took her first bite, she realized she was sorely mistaken. In hindsight, Lily realized how morbid the idea of a Chamoy pickle really was. She says “ the premise of a pickle marinated in chamoy sold on TikTok shop is disgusting and it was literally the worst thing I have ever eaten” and would definitely NOT recommend a Chamoy Pickle from TikTok shop to anyone.
On the other hand, Suzanna seemed to be enjoying her Chamoy Pickle. I had a small bite of just the pickle from the carvings and let me just say, nothing about that pickle tasted real. It smelled like an average pickle but as soon as you tasted it there was no essence of pickle to be found. The aftertaste was sweet..? To this day I still do not understand the Chamoy Pickle. Suzanna’s experience was completely different from Lily’s as Suzanna noted how the Chamoy Pickle “was pretty good, but once you get to the bottom it turns gross.” She says her favorite part of the pickle was the Salsagetti and mentioned how she would eat it by itself if she could.
Overall the Chamoy Pickle Kit does not seem like much of a positive experience so I guess I would advise you to only try it if you’re feeling brave enough to ingest all of that red dye.
