With 9 weeks of Premier League football action gone, some players and teams have impressed compared to their preseason expectations, and others have failed to fulfill their potential. Will these teams keep up their respective successes and failures, or will they change the tide over the next 29 weeks of action?
As of now, on the 24th of October, Tottenham holds the top spot in the table with 23 points, as Man City, Arsenal, and Liverpool follow behind. While Tottenham has had a lightning-hot start to the 23/24 season, it is hard to truly see this continuing. With many close games like Luton (away), Sheffield United (home), and a very controversial win at home over a 9-man Liverpool side, it is unlikely that they will continue to get out of these close games unscathed. Liverpool, after undergoing a complete midfield rebuild this past summer, has come out the gates firing with their big-name signing Dominik Szoboszlai exceeding expectations thus far.
Man City have been typical for them, which is nothing short of exquisite, even with the absence of Kevin De Bruyne, one of the best midfielders of his generation. With his reemergence nearing closer it only suggests that City will eventually gain strength going into the 2nd half of the season. Arsenal can’t be counted out of the title race yet either, after an impressive win against Man City they seem to be finding their form at the right time.
For the rest of the season, I see Liverpool winning the title. If it was anyone as a manager other than Klopp, I would not be as sure, but as the man who has pushed the blues since the 2018/2019 season, he knows how to get the job done. It will be a close race to the end, but I think Liverpool will just edge it over the course of 38 games. Typically, the PFA Player of the Year also plays for the team that claims the crown, and this year I see it being no different as Mo Salah will be the PFA Player of the Year. However, the top goalscorer for the 2023/24 season will be, no surprise, Erling Haaland. Along with Liverpool, Man City, Arsenal and Tottenham will make up the top 4, in that order.
For the bottom three, I see Everton finishing in the 18th spot after flirting with relegation for the past 2 seasons and not strengthening in areas of necessity over the summer. Along with Everton, I see Luton Town going down in the 19th spot.
It is always difficult for a newly promoted side to stay up against teams that have been getting large sums of funds from the Premier League for years now, and it takes a special coaching staff and player group to get it done. In the case of Luton, they don’t have either, they don’t have a striker with a real knack for scoring goals, or a defender with a true physical presence, nor do they have a proven manager who has cut it in the league for multiple seasons. Lastly, I see Sheffield United. With only one point collected thus far into the season, it is going to be a difficult climb back to safety. As of now, they are 5 points off of safety, and with a hard strength of schedule remaining, the odds are against them.
