Everyone should have enough pop culture knowledge to remember the drama that was caused during the 2009 VMA Awards. Although some of you were fresh out of the womb, you should be aware of the show that led to the division between Kanye West and Taylor Swift. In fact, it was at the MTV Video Music Awards that Kayne tried to steal Taylor’s spotlight. These high stakes have continued throughout the years, which brings us to the present. Just 38 years after the musically focused award show premiered, I have come to predict the future champions. One might ask what my qualifications are for this assignment, and to which I would say I have not a single one. In fact, my predictions could even be biased, yet I will continue on. The award show has many categories, but since I simply do not have enough time or expertise to go into predicting the best cinematography award, I will stick to just a few awards.
Video of the Year
To complete this prediction, I tried to watch all of the music videos with no sound, but I still had an overall knowledge of the music itself. By putting the music and talent of the musician aside, I have come to the conclusion that Unholy by Kim Petras and Sam Smith is my guess to win. Overall the music video did just bring a bit of a thrill and exciting edge to the song. Of course, the song itself is quite scary and sometimes haunts me in the late hours. While the other music videos were lovely and matched their songs well, I truly just felt that Unholy was better. The only problem is that a decent amount of the voting is based on popular votes, so I might have to say that this could go to Vampire or Kill Bill due to the following of the artists. Also if I get all of these wrong please forgive me as I have already suffered enough from listening to Unholy, which makes me want to become a nun.
Album of the Year
This is another category that holds a lot of weight in the music industry. It truly asks if the artist created an album with the vocals, videos, and overall feng shui to warrant this award. The options are Renaissance by Beyonce, Her Loss by 21 and Drake, then Heroes & Villains by Metro Boomin. Midnight by Swift, SOS by SZA, and Endless Summer Vacation by Miley were nominated as well. I think that it could be a win for Midnight by Taylor Swift, partially because of the fan base, but also because it is a decent album.
Artist of the Year
Beyonce, Doja Cat, Taylor Swift, KAROL G, Nicki Minaj, and Shakira are the options for the coveted Artist of the Year
award. All of these artists have been in the music industry for quite some time, but looking at this year in particular some artists stand out a lot more than others. I will probably have to strike Doja and Shakira from the list due to their recent nefarious activities, which range from tax fraud to being rude to their fans. Nicki and KAROL G have not been big names this year, whereas Beyonce and Swift have been quite popular over the span of 2023. Honestly, I hate to choose between the two because I am not in the mood to create another Kanye West scene, but I think Beyonce might have her win this year!
Best New Artist
For this category, I will have to list out our options here. I understand that this is the new artist section, but some of the artists are a bit too underground for my personal taste. The options start with GoRilla, then Ice Spice, with Kaii and PinkPantheress following. Finally, there is Renee Rap and Peso Pluma. Shockingly I am going with Ice Spice. From her on-stage appearances with Taylor Swift over the summer to her amazing collaboration with multiple artists this year, she has truly earned a win.
