Why You Should Get Letterboxd
Everyone needs to get Letterboxd now! For people who do not know, Letterboxd is an app for you to keep track of your recent movie watches and your watch lists. You can also read reviews of movies (they are so funny I swear). Additionally, you can see the Letterboxd ratings of movies, but beware that these ratings are usually really harsh so if you see a movie above 3.5 it is probably good. In my opinion, the movies that receive the highest ratings are usually those that are very visually pleasing and have good cinematography, and are not necessarily based on developed plots. It is basically like a social media platform for movie lovers. So I’m going to list a couple of the features of the app because it can sometimes be confusing to navigate.
Watchlist:
I know some people originally believed that is a list of the movies that you have watched but it is actually a list of movies you want to watch. It is a great way to keep track of the movies you want to watch (so that you never have to spend hours scrolling trying to find something to watch). Below are a couple of movies that are on my watchlist:
- The Farewell
Ok so I am an avid lover of all AO3 films, so of course I had to look up the best-rated ones. This movie came up on numerous lists, so I will definitely be watching it soon. It has a 4.0 Letterboxd rating which is also a good sign. So the movie is about a Chinese-American family who travels back to China after hearing about their Grandmother’s terminal illness. The family has decided to keep it from the grandmother that this illness is in fact terminal. They end up staging a wedding to see their grandmother for the last time. I think this movie is really going to show immigrant family dynamics which I am excited about.
- Thelma & Louise
So this movie is iconic and all credit for the recommendation comes from Leila Tabrizian. So basically…. Louise shoots a guy who tried to rape Thelma. But due to the incriminating circumstances, Thelma and Louise make a run and engage in a cross-country chase. This movie also has a 4-star rating which is really good.
- Barbie
I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS. Everyone must watch when it comes out. That’s all.
- Atonement
- Waves
Recent Activity:
Ok so your recent activity is different from the films you have previously watched. You only add the movies you just watched to your recent activity and then these movies will pop up on your profile. This is a good way to keep track of how many movies you have watched in a year. Some of my recent activity and my ratings are listed below:
Before Sunset:
- My rating: 3.5/5
- Letterboxd rating: 4.3/5
Stepmom
- My rating: 3.5/5
- Letterboxd rating: 3.5/5
Minari:
- My rating: 3.5/5 (my rating is controversial)
- Letterboxd rating: 4.1/5
A Thousand and One: (this movie was so so good, pls go watch in theaters)
- My rating: 4.5/5
- Letterboxd rating: 3.9/5
Moonlight:
- My rating: 4/5
- Letterboxd rating: 4.2/5
Reviews:
The reviews on Letterboxd are so so funny and relatable. If you want an honest review about a movie, I highly suggest looking it up on Letterboxd. You can also see your friend’s most recent watches and the reviews that they gave on your account.
Lists:
So I just started getting into these. I officially made one for my favorite movies better Letterboxd only allows you to list 4 on your account. Also looking up or following other people’s lists is really helpful when finding a movie to watch.
