AMHS is “Feeling the Bern”
August 28, 2015
Cheering preemptively at least five times on Saturday, August 22nd , the large crowd egged on staff workers and technicians mistaken as Bernie Sanders. This energy and excitement persisted throughout the night as a diverse crowd roared their approval to such key phrases as, “Nobody will fight harder to end institutional racism,” and “Do not think small, think big,” a consistent theme of the night. Among the crowd of eager and politically savvy individuals, a small group of Academic Magnet seniors huddled together and listened intently to the presidential candidate’s ideas, carefully considering his policies and affirmations. The student’s motivations for attending varied, some like senior Lauren Medich “wanted to hear what he was about because [they] heard he was chill,” while others like senior Zach Zuber were already convinced of their support. The upcoming presidential election will be the first opportunity that the senior class will have to vote; so choosing a candidate is paramount. Sanders’ speech focused on a variety of topics, covering institutional racism, wage inequality, education reform and mass incarceration. The student body of Academic Magnet, as described by Lauren Medich, is overall politically aware and politically involved and will continue to educate themselves on the 2016 candidates throughout the election. While the presidential race continues, Sanders’ will travel across the country promoting his campaign and making sure every state, “feels the Bern.” Seniors, be sure to turn out to vote for your candidate on November 8th!
