Super Smash Bros. Tournament
April 9, 2015
The first ever Super Smash Bros. tournament hosted by two seniors is coming to Magnet!
Super Smash Bros. is a game that was first introduced in 1999 for the Nintendo 64. It allowed people to play together as any of the Nintendo characters. The game had a strong popularity, with over one million copies sold in Japan. Later, in 2001, Super Smash Bros. Melee was released. This game sold over 7 million copies and soon became the best selling game for the GameCube. This version contained many more characters than the original, two new single player modes, more multiplayer modes, and a tournament mode. A third version, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, was released in 2008. This one featured new characters such as Solid Snake and Sonic the Hedgehog. This game was also the first in the franchise to support online play through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. New to this version was an Adventure Mode, titled Super Smash Bros. Brawl: The Subspace Emissary. The newest version was released in 2014, Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. New characters featured in this game included Mega Man and Pac-Man.
As Super Smash Bros. games have increased in popularity, more people have played the game leading to tournaments. The first publicized tournament was held in 2002 and Super Smash Bros. Melee was played. From 2004-2007, Melee was a part of the Major League Gaming’s roster. It was picked up in 2010 for a pro circuit and it was hosted again in 2014. Melee was also present in Evolution Championship Series in Las Vegas in 2007, 2013, 2014, and is in the plans for 2015. Apex in New Jersey is another prominent Super Smash Bros. tournament and the Apex 2015 was the largest, featuring all titles.
If you wish you could be involved in one of these tournaments, then contact seniors Evan Camp and Matthew Borland. The entry fee is three dollars and a bracket will be created with the winner receiving a cash prize of all the entries. Right now, they are still looking for more people to enter and you can sign up during lunch. There will be announcements about the competition and where it will take place.
