On Saturday March 21 the AMHS Science Club went to Newberry College and participated in the statewide Science Olympiad competition. There were many different events that the team participated in, such as Bridge Building, Protein Modeling, Disease Detectives, and Forensics. For the first time in Magnet history, the science club won and beat out the previous champion, Clinton High School, and their closest competitor, Irmo. The scoring is similar to golf, where the lowest score is the winner. Magnet got 76, Irmo with 78, and Clinton had 81. The winning team consisted of Jamisen Collier, Timothy Corder, Aidan Gomez, Leotie Hakkila, Dawn Jensen, Ethan Kautz, Steven Lu, Kilbey McCormick, Vaibhav Mohanty, Zoe Norris, Alex Rovner, Vivian Song, John Staubes, and Whitney Su.  There was also a secondary team that wasn’t allowed to compete for the national prize, but they did get first for the non-competitive team. This team included Fanny Cheung, Helena Guo, Christian Long, Robyn Loucks, Sloan Nietert, John Pavlides, Michael Pi, Alex Puckhaber, Sashank Sakamuri, Anna Smirnova, Anthony Spyropoulos, Helena Upshaw, Jenny Yao, and Nelson Yeung. There were also partner winners for specific topics that won medals, ribbons, and/or scholarships. On May 15-16, the Science Club will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska to compete in the national competition. Over 120 teams, both middle and high school and from all fifty states will compete. Congratulations Science Club!
