With the socially distanced nature of the sport, the AMHS Girls Varsity tennis team is back and better than ever in order to compete in the 3A division. And with preseason wrapping up, the team is also planning to have their first match this Thursday, September 2nd, at the home courts of Academic Magnet High School, with the competition being Hanahan High School. As it stands, the current lineup consists of:

1. Francis Drake (12), 2. Maria Cymbaluk (11), 3. Chloe Trowman (9), 4. Lucy Manuel (12), 5. Catie Gill (11), 6. Anne Young (12), 7. Dylan Geddis (11), 8. Emma Hsu (11), 9. Laura Robertson (11), 10. Mary Blake Hand (11),  11. Moyu Yamaguchi (11), and 11. Kaia Gerber (9).

We also have some insight into our new coach, Justin Jones, as I asked him what he loves most about this position. Fairly recently he got into the coaching scene. “I really have a passion for the game of tennis, and I love seeing kids progress and improve along the way.” He is an avid tennis player himself, due to the fact he has spent most of his life playing the sport.

I asked around for a couple of favorite parts of the tennis team, and here’s what stands out.

“I really enjoy team bonding.”

“Since everyone is so skilled, you get to learn and improve a lot.”

“Hanging out with the girls.”

“Being outside and having fun with everybody.”

“It’s a good way to make friends.”

“Being a part of a team is really fun because Covid messed that up last year.”

“The people.”

“My favorite part of tennis practice is the times when you’re playing doubles and you and your partner both let the ball go untouched in between you. It always makes me laugh.”
