College Football Through Week 2

College Football Through Week 2

With NCAA’s football debut in September and COVID-19 concerns, we have seen a lot of unorthodox things go on in football. Conferences including Mountain West and Mid-American Conference  have opted out of the 2020 season while all other conferences including the SEC, Pac 12 and Big 10 are in for the remainder of the season. The rankings from week one to now have seen a lot of changes including the swap of Alabama to Clemson for the #1 spot as well as the far drop for LSU and Oklahoma.

One big wildcard for the 2020 season is the Tennessee Volunteers. While the Volunteers have gotten a pretty unexpected sizeable recruiting class and are still 2-0 on the season, they have not entirely performed as many expected for this season. With a close 4th quarter win over the Gamecocks week 1 and a decent win over unranked Missouri in week 2, they have not proved much. Despite these two mediocre games, many still have hope for the volunteers as they move in to a week 3 game against Georgia.

Another interesting spot in college football is the top 4 for the season which has remained nearly the same. In no particular order, Georgia, Clemson, Alabama, and Florida have all stayed at the top through their 2-3 games. Georgia had a slightly rocky start with uncertainty in their QB position with two fresh quarterbacks in D’Wan Mathis and JT Daniels with a veteran backup in Stetson Bennett who has saved the Bulldogs from two close games under center. Clemson and Alabama also have two fantastic teams this year with a lot of depth and talent. Florida, through 5 games on the season, has played two cupcake games then battled it out with Ole Miss, South Carolina, and Miami which are all semi-decent teams this year. They definitely have potential to win the SEC East this year but will have some stiff competition from UGA.

Two unexpected losers this year are LSU and Oklahoma. LSU week one had a tough and unexpected loss against Mississippi State. It’s tough to bounce back from such a great past season when you lose over 20 of your starters and have uncertainty in the QB position in the shadow of the great Joe Burrow. However, LSU did have a bounce back win against a cupcake and has potential to stay up there in the rankings for this season. Oklahoma, however, has almost no hope for a bounce back this year with two horrible losses against Kansas State and ranked 25 Iowa State. Their redshirt freshman QB Spencer Rattler has had a rocky start with 3 interceptions in their recent game against Kansas State. He adds on 4 touchdowns and almost 400 yards to almost save the game.
