Mockingjay: Part 1 Review
Splitting the final installment in a series into a two-part movie has become a recurring theme in today’s society. Harry Potter, Twilight, and Hunger Games have all fallen prey to this new norm. While some claim it’s to maximize revenue, others say this decision is to drag out the series for fans that don’t want it to end. But, while Deathly Hallows and even Breaking Dawn have storylines that lend themselves a second movie to include all the major points, Mockingjay: Part 1 seems to drag out the plot. The movie is well produced and provides background to the upcoming, and last, movie, but it was incredibly tedious until the very end. It focuses entirely on Katniss’s propaganda efforts after ruining the Games and the response of the Districts, the beginning of a war to overthrow the Capitol. The romance is put on a backburner while Peeta and Katniss are put on opposing sides in the eyes of the public. Meanwhile, Gale assists Katniss and her family and selflessly volunteers to rescue a group of tributes from the Capitol. But, that’s about it for the plot. The last film in this series is predicted to be an enthralling ending to the book trilogy, but Mockingjay: Part 1 just falls short.
