Kylie Jenner: Self-Made Billionaire?

I feel like this year is really about like, the year of just realizing stuff

The entertainment industry blew up in March 2018 when Forbes released their newest and youngest self-made billionaire: the one and only Kylie Jenner.

If you have been living under a rock for your entire life, here is a little background on the youngest KarJenner: Kylie Kristen Jenner was born on August 10th, 1997 to Kris and (then) Bruce Jenner. She is the youngest of Kris’s 5 other children: Kourtney, Kim, Khloé, Rob and Kendall. In November 2015, Kylie released her iconic Kylie Lip Kits, which brought her to create the empire that is Kylie Cosmetics. She is currently the richest KarJenner sibling, with Kim falling next in line at $350 million.

Flash forward to August 2019, Forbes came out with their newest issue with Jenner on the front cover as the world’s youngest self-made billionaire, at 21. This means she beat out Mark Zuckerberg (at 23) and Bill Gates (at 31). According to CNBC, Kylie Cosmetics is valued over $900 million. When combined with her supposed self-worth of $100 million, her brand altogether, is worth $1 billion.

While Kylie’s hard work and dedication to her personal brand have paid off, some question if she is actually “self-made.” In the beginning of Kylie Cosmetics, Jenner deposited $250,000 of her own money, made through modeling, to produce the first 15,000 lip kits. Still today, she owns 100% of the company. However, the term “self-made” might not be the best way to describe her journey to success.

Considering Kylie was born into the Kardashian-Jenner dynasty, her name was essentially what brought her to fame. If she did not have this name, would her company have flourished as quickly as it did? Probably not. However, since Jenner already had this large following when launching Kylie Cosmetics, there was no doubt that this business would somewhat make it, at the bare minimum. Kylie has even admitted that social media has had a large influence on marketing; it definitely helps having 172.4 million Instagram followers on her combined accounts.

Kylie Cosmetics began by producing lip kits, which included a liquid lipstick with a matching lip liner. Over the past 4 years, it has spread to include eyebrow products, concealer, highlighters and any other makeup product you could imagine. (Watch out, Jeffree Star!) Her products were known to sell out in minutes of launching in the beginning. Now, they are very easy to purchase, since Kylie recently agreed to sell her makeup products in Ulta stores across the country.

In May 2019, Jenner started Kylie Skin, a vegan skin company. Refinery29, among many news sources, has reviewed some of the products she sells, with mostly positive feedback. While it has not blown up like her cosmetic line back in 2015, Kylie Skin is still contributing to her billion dollar business.

Whether you are a fan or not, you have to give Kylie credit on the name she has built for herself (aside from the one thanks to Keeping Up with the Kardashians). Her dominance, in not only the makeup world but also the business world, is one that no one has done by the age of 21. It is VERY impressive, but not self-made.
