Trump proclamation blocked by federal judge

Caravans have already brought thousands of migrants to the U.S.-Mexico border, and more are anticipated to come in the following weeks. All eyes will be on the U.S. government’s treatment and reaction to the migrants.

President Donald Trump recently stated that he would be giving directives to the Border Patrol and U.S. Army concerning the denial of refuge to any migrants who did not enter through the official border crossings between Mexico and the U.S. This statement comes at a time when there are thousands of migrants coming from Central and South America that are attempting to illegally enter the United States.

More caravans are expected to bring even more people to the border, and the United States’ government faces some tough decisions in the future ahead as to how they treat the migrants, as well as how the display is handled over the following weeks. Trump’s proclamation, however, has faced severe backlash from different jurisdictions involved near the U.S. and Mexico border.

In fact, San Francisco’s District Court Judge Jon S. Tigar released a restraining order to block the government from attempting to follow the new rules of Trump’s proclamation. This order stops the rule to ban asylum to the thousands of migrants illegally crossing the border until the overall case is decided by the courts, and it will apply on a national level. Trump’s reasoning behind his initial proclamation was to protect the integrity of the United States’ border, stating that it would be detrimental to national interest to allow all of the migrants refuge within the U.S. In response, Judge Tigar stated, “the scope of the president’s authority…may not rewrite the immigration laws to impose a condition that Congress has expressly forbidden,”.

For a long time, the immigration laws of the U.S. have allowed migrants illegally entering the country asylum if they are fleeing persecution or seeking safety. So, as Trump has tried to change these laws through the executive branch, his powers have been checked by the judicial courts. It did not help President Trump’s case that his administration attempted to submit the rule to a federal register that would allow the new rules to begin without a period of time for public review.

After all, immigration policy and media coverage concerning this topic are at an all time high in discussion in the U.S. This is a very important issue because Trump ran on a platform largely regarding radical immigration laws and reform with his idea of a massive, fortified border wall with Mexico. Now, Trump’s promises, mentality, and character will be tested harder than ever in how he chooses to deal with the migrants fleeing their home countries in Central and South America.

The caravans and U.S. response is even more important to pay attention to because all of the debate and coverage on the topic of immigration, as the U.S. response to the issue will be seen on a world wide scale. How Trump and the government choose to treat the migrants may cause severe upheaval in the following months, and there is no doubt that the government needs to be very careful. Regardless, President Trump needs to realize that he cannot do whatever he wants, and that his powers will continue to be checked hard by the Judicial and Legislative powers at hand.
