Shocking New York Times ‘op-ed’ article causes controversy, raises questions
SEPTEMBER 5th: Last Wednesday, The New York Times published an article titled: “I Am Part of the Resistance Inside the Trump Administration”. The article, listed as an opinion-editorial piece, is supposedly an essay written by a senior White House official that is part of a “resistance” against President Donald Trump within the White House.
The anonymous source says that there are members in Trump’s close political circle that are taking steps to slow down his presidential agenda and intentions. The source also says that Trump’s amorality is “detrimental to the health of our republic”and that this so-called resistance within the White House is apt to thwart the attitude and erratic compulsions of Trump. As the article continues, Trump is likened to a faux-Conservative, who only displays Republican ideals in public, “scripted” settings. The alleged official calls Trump “anti-trade and anti-democratic,” and vows to guide the executive branch into a better course from within until Trump’s time as president is finished.
Surprisingly, the source says that the inside resistance does want the president’s administration to triumph, but that it will only succeed if the president’s wants and needs are contained or at least slowed. The source mentions the fact that many would like to see the president impeached, but it continues that this would “precipitate a constitutional crisis.”
There are some glaring truths about the president’s attitude and morals within the article, but to the common reader, there is also a glaring abnormality. The so-called senior White House official has yet to be named. Subsequently, the article has caused much controversy within the political community.
Concerning the anonymity of the author, The New York Times stated: “The Times today is taking the rare step of publishing an anonymous Op-Ed essay. We have done so at the request of the author, a senior official in the Trump administration whose identity is known to us and whose job would be jeopardized by its disclosure. We believe publishing this essay anonymously is the only way to deliver an important perspective to our readers.”
Trump has had many quarrels with the media up to this point in his presidency, and this article in The New York Times is no exception. President Trump has been publicly critical of the article calling it “gutless” and “a disgrace.” Many people across the nation are now demanding a name of the official who wrote the essay, and Trump is even demanding that The New York Times turn over the critic.
While the name is still anonymous, the White House and actions within remain an incomplete mystery, for now. Whether the name is released or not will determine the extent to which this controversy continues to help or hurt the state of the country.
