Why I Didn’t Watch the Olympics This Year
The Winter Olympics came to a conclusion recently, and I watched a total of probably 3 events. I remember watching Shaun White win gold in the snowboarding halfpipe, but other than that I could not tell you what happened. At all. I follows sports pretty closely and usually get very invested in the Winter Olympics, but I simply did not care this time around. The question is: Why?
The first thing that comes to mind is that the National Hockey League (NHL) banned its players from participating in the Olympics. Ice Hockey is always my favorite event, and Olympic hockey has produced some truly memorable moments in hockey history. Sidney Crosby’s OT game-winner to win gold in 2010 will forever be remembered as one of the great moments in hockey history. This year, I didn’t know a single player on the US team. This made me much less inclined to watch any of the games.
Additionally, I found that every time I turned on the TV, there was something really uninteresting on. I’m sorry, but I really don’t care about some of the events. When I turn on the primetime NBC coverage of the Olympics and I see figure skating, I’m going to turn off the TV. Every time. I understand that some people enjoy figure skating, but I really do not.
You might be wondering: what kinds of things did I do instead of watching the Olympics? Here are a few:
- slept
- watched “The Office”
- watched the office (my dad’s)
- beat the entirety of NFL Street
- thought about playing NFL Street 2
- ate one whole thing of cheez-its
- took like 17 Advil (total)
- tried to get into Bon Iver
- wrote a parody of “Dynamite” by Taio Cruz called “Dino-Light”
- looked for the remote to watch the Olympics
- googled “olympic results”
- realized that I don’t know what “Tron” is about
- played nightcrawlers
I hope this gives you a good idea of why I didn’t watch the Olympics this year. I can only hope I will be more invested during the next Olympic Games.
