Dead Trends

Childhood was a simpler time full of fun games, toys, and pointless trinkets.

The infamous Silly Bandz

The infamous Silly Bandz

As kids, we were obsessed with seemingly stupid objects and games that we all loved so much for some reason. The times on the playground and around the neighborhood would have never been the same without these childhood trends that will never be forgotten. Here are a few of my favorite and most prized childhood possessions:

Silly Bandz

The infamous Silly Bandz

Do you remember the elementary school playground? Screaming kids, scolding teachers, jungle gyms, and most importantly silly band trades. All the kids would storm the playground with Silly Bandz stacked up and down their arms, excited to trade their basic elephant for the unique and rare specialty bands like the rockstar, fairy pack, or western themed bandz.

Poptropica

Another fun childhood trend you forgot about was the Poptropica craze. Even though many of us didn’t have fancy laptops when we were kids and probably had bug bulky computers at home, we found a way to play this fun computer game. The most popular time was during computer class or when we found a spare computer lying around. To play Poptropica you got to design your own character and run them around all of the Poptropica worlds.

Webkinz

If you always wanted a puppy, a kitten, or an exotic unicorn when you were a kid and your mom always said no, you probably turned to Webkinz to fill the void. These furry friends were even more special than classic stuffed animals because you could register them online and digitally play with them. It was like having a pet but you couldn’t kill it!

Chinese Erasers

You know those little erasers that all the cool kids had that were shaped like little animals or food? And you would break them apart and put them back together while your sc
ience teacher droned on about sedimentary rocks? Those little erasers were the highlight of my childhood school life. I never had any of my own but I borowed them from all my friends because they were just so fun!

Pokemon Cards

I personally never played Pokemon, but it was big among the kids of my generation. With the mythical creatures and easy to use cards, kids were crazed by this trend. Although the cards are no longer as abundant as they used to be, this trend is not quite dead yet. Pokemon Go, the phone app that uses the same creatures sparked a new era of Pokemon lovers.

These few trends were what made my childhood and the childhood of many others completely unforgettable. I hope you enjoyed this short synopsis of the trends and trinkets you most likely forgot about.
