What if your parent was also your teacher?!

Ella Berger, Staff Writer

We have multiple sets of twins, siblings, and cousins in the Magnet community. But what is even more interesting? Student-teacher relationships!

To name a few,

We have Mr. Eicher, who teaches AP and Honors Chemistry courses. His daughter, Isabel Eicher, is a sophomore here at Magnet. In fact, the Eichers pose a triple threat to our community– Mr. Eicher, his daughter Isabel Eicher, and Isabel’s stepmother Mrs. Eicher, are all members of the Magnet Community.  In their spare time, Mr. Eicher and Mrs. Eicher enjoy training for and completing in triathlons.  They also do iron men competitions.  Due to their adoration of the “swim, bike, run” lifestyle, Mr. and Mrs. Eicher are the heads of the Academic Magnet triathlon club, which is very popular among our students.

Isabel is in Ms Eicher’s AP Biology and Chemistry classes.  I asked Ms Eicher what it was like having Isabel in her class this year, and she jokingly replied,  “Isabel is a great student so she is very easy to teach. If she makes a bad grade, I don’t tell Mr. Eicher because I don’t want her to get in trouble.”

Next, we have the BC Calculus, Multi-Variable Calculus, and Honors Pre-calculus teacher, Mr. Johnston. His son, Maddox Johnston, more formally known by his pen name, Rudolf Rudolfson, is a student here at magnet.  Maddox has been on the AMHS campus since he was a 6th grader at School of the Arts.  Mr Johnston finds a certain peacefulness in knowing he can find him at a moment’s notice and be re-assured that he is OK, and not, say, lying in a ditch somewhere.  Its the sort of primal peacefulness only a parent could understand.  Having said that, Mr Johnston admits that he sometimes forgets that Maddox goes to school here.  He will see him in the hallway and its like “oh there’s Maddox…”.  Mr Johnston says that “its safe to say he and I just do our own thing and we are here for each other when things come up.  I feel blessed when prompted to think about it.”Mr Johnston has not had the pleasure of having his son as a student.  Yet.  On the weekends, these two math wizards, Maddox and Mr. Johnston enjoy fishing and facetiming.

Third, Mr. Wright, who teaches Honors European Literature, Creative Writing, and Film and Fiction, has a daughter named Zoe Wright who is a sophomore  here at magnet.  Zoe greatly enjoys being in her father’s creative writing class.  Mr Wright said it’s like having a mini-me in his class, but with long hair.  Upon reflecting on what it’s like to have his daughter in class, he said that it’s definitely not as weird as he thought it was going to be.  In fact, he actually really enjoys it.

Last, but certainly not least, Mr Murphy’s step-daughter, Chloe Belton, is a freshman.  Mr Murphy has known Chloe since she was in the 4th grade.  Back then, she ate a steady diet of macaroni & cheese and chicken fingers.  Mr Murphy is proud to say he played an instrumental role in introducing her to escargot, Thai food, and other gourmet foods!  Last year, they won the Post and Courier Pumpkin Decorating contest with Minion pumpkins.

Mr Murphy and Chloe both like Dr. Who, Monty Python, and going to Broadway shows.  Mr Murphy is very glad she got into the Magnet even if sometimes she talks too much on the drive to school in the morning!
