Meet the New Teachers: Mrs. Galizia
Here is a inside scoop on one of our new teachers at Magnet this year!
Mrs. Galizia would like to thank everyone for being so welcome and helpful to her as she starts her Magnet teaching career. She is excited to be here and wants to be here a long time. She looks forward to seeing the Magnet community at all of the sporting events throughout the year.
Where are you from?
Mrs. Galizia is from Greenwood, South Carolina, where she attended Greenwood High School. Her mascot was an eagle (which is a raptor) and she performed in the school show choir.
What made you want to teach at AMHS?
She wanted to teach because the students have a reputation for being hard working, goal oriented, and wanting to learn. She is glad to be teaching high school once again.
Where have you previously taught?
She taught at Saint John’s High School for 2 years, Morningside Middle for 7 years, teaching the 8th grade, West Ashley Middle for 2 years, teaching the 8th grade, and now she is at Magnet.
What classes do you teach?
She teaches Global Studies I, Honors U.S. History, and Honors Government and Economics.
How would you describe yourself (what 3 words best describe you and why)?
Mrs. Galizia is caring, because she is very motherly to all students and truly cares about them. She likes to be organized, otherwise she would be driven crazy without structure. She also defines herself as naturally sarcastic, and she likes to lighten the mood.
What is your family life?
She has been married to her husband, Nick, who is an architect, for 8 years. They have a beautiful daughter, Soleil, who has begun the 1st grade at 6 years old. They have a dog named Bishop who is part lab, pitbull, and boxer. They rescued him from the pound and he is 11 years old.
Do you have any special talents?
Mrs. Galizia makes jewelry, plays the piano, and is learning to play the guitar. She is also a singer and one of her favorite songs to sing is “Sweet Child of Mine” by Guns and Roses.
What inspired you to be a teacher?
She has always wanted to be a teacher and grew up in a teaching household, as her mother was a counselor and physical education teacher. One major change in her path as a teacher is that she used to want to teach elementary school students, but she discovered that high school was the optimal place for her to teach.
What is the best part of your job?
She loves the students and how inspiring they can be to her.
Who are your heroes and why?
Harriet Tubman for being the strongest woman that she has ever read about. Bob Marley for promoting peace among all people. Her parents for setting a good example for her and instilling the proper virtues and morals in her from a young age.
What is your goal as a teacher?
She plans to teach students to question more and examine the ‘why’ more often than just knowing what happened. She would like to be remembered by her students, as she has forgotten many of her high school teachers. She wants to have a lasting, positive impression on them so that she will be remembered.
