What to Expect From Girl Scouts This Cookie Season
March 16, 2017
Our nation’s beloved Girl Scouts are changing things up this year with 2 new exclusive cookie flavors and several new product collaborations. On National S’mores Day, the Girl Scouts of the USA announced that they would be releasing 2 flavors inspired by S’mores. The first one is described as a “crispy graham cookie double dipped in yummy creme icing and finished with a scrumptious chocolatey coating”. The second is made with two “crunchy graham sandwich cookies with creamy chocolate and marshmallowy filling”. Joining favorites like the Samoa and the Thin Mint, select Girl Scout markets will care one of the two new S’mores flavors during the 2017 cookie season. The S’mores cookies will be the first addition to the flavor lineup since 2015. Girl Scout Sylvia Acevedo, interim CEO, says “As we approach the 100th anniversary of the first known sale of cookies by Girl Scouts, it only seems natural to celebrate it with a new cookie flavor that ties to our heritage and captures the adventurous, take-charge, and civic minded spirit of our girls. Now consumers will have another delicious way to support girls as they hone leadership, financial literacy, business, and people skills, while using their cookie earnings to address community issues, or invest in fun and educational experiences.”
Many companies have also chosen to celebrate the Girl Scout cookie through other treats including cereals, ice creams and baking mixes. General Mills launched two cereals inspired by the Thin Mint as well as the Samoa. Senior marketing manager for Cereal Innovation, Alan Cunningham stated that, “General Mills is excited about its relationship with Girl Scouts of the USA, an organization that promotes a lifetime of leadership, while preparing girls to empower themselves.” The Girl Scouts also teamed up with Breyer’s in 2013 and created 2 new flavors for their “Blasts!” line. The Thin Mint flavor features Thin Mints pieces and swirls of fudge in mint-flavored ice cream. Likewise, the Samoas flavor also features cookie pieces combined with coconut fudge swirled in a coconut caramel ice cream. Most recently, Pillsbury released a line of Girl Scout cookie baking mixes. Similarly to Breyers and General Mills, they have also chosen to celebrate the scrumptious flavors of Thin Mints and Samoas. The two flavors are enhanced in a Thin Mint brownie mix, Caramel & Coconut Cupcake Mix, Thin Mint Cupcake mix and Caramel & Coconut Blondie Mix.
