AMHS Chess Team
Chess. Some call it a sport, others a hobby. But for a few people, chess can be not only a fun pastime, but a competitive game as well.
This past weekend, the chess team from academic magnet high school played at the 2017 South Carolina Scholastic Championship, where the winner not only earns a trophy for their school, but also a guaranteed spot in Nationals! The setting consisted of 9-12th graders, with 5 thirty minute games, with a 5 second delay before every move. This year, the chess team of Academic Magnet High School consisted of senior Sohan Kotecha, sophomore Bohan Wang, and sophomore James Staubes. Unfortunately, we did not win the state championship. Bohan and James both won three out of their five games, and placed 12th and 16th respectively. Sohan was unable to attend the tournament due to previous commitments and scheduling errors.
Nevertheless, our boys did extremely well, battling against students well above their age and rating. If you see any of these three chess team members around school, please give them a high five!
Hopefully we can come back with a W next time.
