Trump’s Immigration Ban Sparks Protests Nationwide
When President Donald Trump took office on January 20th, American citizens knew that he planned to take action to further prevent terrorist attacks and protect our nation’s borders, but were unsure as to how he would do this. It was not until Friday, January 27th that his plan became public. President Trump placed a ban on the citizens of 7 Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States; this is a ban of more than 218 million people for 90 days and “suspends the admission of all refugees for 120 days”. The countries affected by this immigration ban include Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Yemen and Somalia. The news of this immigration ban created chaos as protests were organized throughout the nation. The larger rallies took place in Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Washington, and Los Angeles where some of the major airports are located. Trump’s reason for this immigration ban is to avoid “admitting into our country the very threats our soldiers are fighting overseas”, but this has sparked anger in many citizens and foreigners seeking to enter the United States.
This was the second wave of nation wide protests since President Trump’s inauguration, after the marches to protect women’s rights. The protests on this immigration ban took place at some of the nations largest airports where many chanted “no hate, no fear, immigrants are welcome here”. On the night that this reform went in to effect, immigrants in U.S. airports from these banned countries were detained and eventually either released into the United States or put on a plane out of the country. Immigrants from these countries who were allowed to enter the United States were able to do so due to judges granting limited relief for citizens of the seven countries who had already arrived in the U.S. with a valid visa or green card.
