AMHS Girls Tennis Team Attends State Match

The Academic Magnet Girls’ Tennis team, attended the AA state match at Cayce Tennis Center this Saturday, November 12. They went into the match against Christ Church (17-1) with a record of 14-3. The Cavaliers have attended the state match for 10 consecutive years now, which gave them superior experience to the Raptors who haven’t been to a state match since 2009. The final score of the 2009 match was 6-1, and was also played against Christ Church. The teams new coach, Tracey Cassell, SOA English teacher remarked “We have grown a lot as a team since the beginning of the season and feel we have a better perspective on what it will take to win state next year. It’s been a great first year coaching the girls tennis team. The final score certainly does not reflect how hard the girls played today. I am very proud of what they have accomplished”.

The scores are as follows:

SINGLES: Day Nuckolls (CC) def. Mina Schaafsma, 6-0, 6-1; Lauren Allen (CC) def. Aileen Shi, 6-0, 6-0; Abby Riddle (CC) def. Thandi Nixon, 6-3, 6-1; Mary Philpot (CC) def. Carolina Young, 6-0, 6-2; Mary Cage Carter (CC) def. Mary Claire Newsome, 6-0, 6-0.

DOUBLES: Avery Nuckolls/Sarah Allen (CC) def. Schaafsma/Shi, 8-3; Paula Pieper/Jenna Taylor (CC) def. Sophie Estoppey/Tori Streetman, 6-1, 6-1.

Despite their loss, the girls each played their best and are confident that they will be able to come back better next season.
