The New Kanye

Kanye West is well known for his crazy attitude, insane public stunts, and creative genius with music. But his newest album, The Life of Pablo (TLOP), has reached new heights. Aside from Kanye only releasing his album on the streaming platform Tidal, The Life of Pablo is unique, even for Kanye. Featuring 18 tracks and being timed at just under one hour, TLOP takes listeners through a wild ride of Kanyisms and self-absorbed songs, on a much stronger level than his past albums.

Kanye described this album as “a gospel work with curse words”, with the latter half of the quote holding the most prevalence throughout the article. Beginning with “Ultralight Beam,” which is widely regarded as the best song on the album, the entire album starts with a young girl chanting “we don’t want no devil in the house, we want the lord, the lord” before switching to Kanye rapping about his faith in God and his beliefs, followed by a feature by Chance the Rapper about their families and past. “Father Stretch my Hands Pt. 1 and Pt. 2” also feature the gospel song, “Father Stretch My Hand,” a song both about Kanye’s relationship to his dad and his past life experiences with models and females. This song is partially responsible for the “Metro Boomin” trend, as before the primary beat drop Young Metro raps, “If Young Metro don’t trust you I’m gone shoot you,” leading to many popular tweets including “Young Metro don’t trust Donald Trump”. One of the other more famous songs “Famous” references his interactions with Taylor Swift, referring to when he interrupted her 2009 MTV Video Music Awards acceptance speech, and claiming that he made her famous.

Without a doubt, the single most “Kanye” song of the album is without a doubt, “I Love Kanye”. A short 44 second interlude, the song is entirely about himself, entirely in third person. Check out the lyrics here. Overall, Mr. West’s new album is a typical Kanye Album, just a little less great. It has it’s mix of great songs, confusing songs, and downright pointless, much like all his other albums. It is only available on Tidal, a web streaming site, so head over for a free 30 day trial to get a taste of the “New Kanye”.
