REACH Community Service Club

REACH is a club at AMHS that focuses on helping others. The club finds ways to help out both our community and other communities around the world.

The first service project that REACH is involved in is tutoring at Dunston Elementary School. Dunston offers an after school program to its students where they can do their homework and have a place to stay after school if their parents are working. Magnet students go to tutor and play with the students every Tuesday and Thursday from 4-5. Those who help with this describe the experience as “fun and enriching experience.” If you’re interested in joining this project talk to senior Margaret Gibson for a volunteer sheet. They would love more help and you can get service hours!

REACH’s second project begins today. The club will be selling pulseras, colorful, hand-woven bracelets, during lunch in front of the cafeteria for the next 2 weeks until spring break. The bracelets are sold through an organization called The Pulsera Project. This organization educates, empowers, and connects Nicaraguan youth with students in more than 900 U.S. schools. With the money raised from pulsera sales The Pulsera Project funds many programs that empower people through secondary education, university scholarships, housing programs, youth shelter support, workers’ rights advocacy, and funding for environmental initiatives. Their projects are guided by a philosophy of empowerment. Rather than giving things to people, they empower people with the skills, opportunities, and education that allow them to provide for themselves and their communities. The bracelets are fun, colorful, and unique. Each pulsera costs $5 and the proceeds go to a great cause.

REACH is always welcoming new members. If these projects interest you, don’t be afraid to talk to Margaret for more information.
