After a disappointing early end to the 2020 season, the Raptors baseball team is looking to bounce back with a revamped roster under the lead of Coach Rush. Assisting Coach Rush this year is Coach Windom, Academic Magnet Alumni, Max Windom’s father. The Raptors are looking to have a promising season with many returning upperclassmen and a strong addition of freshmen and sophomores. Captain of the baseball team, Hank Tschantz explains that although the team lost a few key players including Will Jordan, Kedar Veeraswamy, and Sully Gholson, “[they] have really good sophomores and freshmen which will be good for this year and years to come”. Cameron Thelan expressed his thoughts on the team by saying “All I see is potential”.

All I see is potential

— Cameron Thelan

Starting at first base this year is Senior and captain Adam Frye. Second base starter is freshman Beatty Cummings. Senior and captain Hank Tschantz is starting at third base and has a spot in the pitching rotation along with Marshall Fleming, Jason Ward, and Cameron Thelan. Starting at shortstop this year is senior and captain Will Culler. Sophomore Marshall Fleming is starting at left field, sophomore Cameron Thelan at center field, and sophomore Jason Ward at right field. Finally, freshman Thomas Martin is starting as the catcher for the team.

The rest of the players on the team are Connor Sewell, Jerry, Noah, Sam Whelan, Jagger, Lucas Reed, Wesley Hawes, Will McCoullogh, and Vishwa Veeraswamy. The baseball team had their first scrimmage against West Ashley two weeks ago and unfortunately lost 8-3. Although the team had a rough start against West Ashley, there were some notable highlights. Marshall Fleming pitched very well with two shutout innings. Additionally, the baseball team had a three run inning which is very impressive. Like the lacrosse teams, this year the baseball team can only play teams that are within their region because of Covid restrictions. This means that they will only play Battery Creek, Hanahan, Bishop England, North Charleston, and Oceanside. They play each team twice, once at home and once away.
