Meeting every Wednesday in the courtyard, the AMHS Spikeball Club has brought one of the newest, most exciting sports to Magnet. Although Spikeball has only rose to prominence in recent years, it’s already amassed a league of players. Requiring just 3 friends and a Spikeball kit, Spikeball can be played almost anywhere. Whether it be on the sand at the beach, on the grass at the park, or anywhere in between, you’re sure to find a great place to play.

While Spikeball sounds like a simple game, it’s endless possibilities are sure to keep you interested. The game consists of two, 2 player teams, a ball, and a net. The point begins with one player serving the ball onto the net while the receiving team has 3 hits to return the ball. The point continues in this format until one team misses the net or is unable to return the ball. Complete with intense rallies and crazy shots, Spikeball can be exciting not only to play, but also to watch.

The organization responsible for founding Spikeball puts on dozens of tournaments every year, encouraging people to become active and participate. While the AMHS Spikeball Club plays solely for fun, there are also professional leagues where more serious players can compete.

Davis Leath, founder and President of the AMHS Spikeball Club, loves the game for a number of reasons. First and foremost, he enjoys the camaraderie that the club fosters. Davis says, “It’s a great way for people to come together.” In addition, he’s enjoyed the competition that the fellow members of the club have provided. “A number of rivalries have emerged which makes each game that much more interesting, but at the end of the day, it’s all in good fun.” As a matter of fact, the AMHS Spikeball Club has organized several tournaments themselves, raising the stakes for the competitive pairings of members.

Bryan Bracy, longtime member of the club, says “I had never played Spikeball much before the club, but I feel as though I’ve become a lot better already.” Furthermore, Bryan is so confident in his abilities as a Spikeball player that he challenges anyone to compete against him in a lighthearted match during lunch.

If you’re interested in playing Spikeball, you’re more than welcome to come out to the courtyard every Wednesday to play a few games. The club is always looking for new members, regardless of skill level, so next time you find yourself looking for something to do, consider Spikeball!
