The World Has Changed A Lot Since 1908...

On the night of November 2, 2016, after arguably one of the best World Series Game 7s in history, the Chicago Cubs finally broke the curse of the Billy Goat. After a rain delay at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio, the Chicago Cubs beat the Cleveland Indians in the 10th inning, 8-7. Ben Zobrist of the Chicago Cubs was named World Series Most Valuable Player. Zobrist had a batting average of .391 during the World Series, scoring 4 runs and batting in 1 run. This World Series win was the clubs first win since 1908 (108 years). The world today is a completely different place compared to the world in 1908. Listed below are some things that put into perspective how long the Chicago Cubs went without winning a World Series.

  • Women were not allowed to vote. The 19th amendment was passed in 1920.
  •  You could not buy sliced bread. Sliced bread did not emerge until the 1920s.
  • Clothes did not have zippers. The modern zipper was not invented until 1911.
  • There were only 46 states in the USA. New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska, and Hawaii did not become states until late 1908.
  • The only way to experience a baseball game was in the stadium. Games were not broadcast on radio until 1921 and television until 1939.
  • Theodore Roosevelt was the President of the United States.
  • 16 US Presidents have been elected.
  • The Titanic did not exist. The construction of the boat started in 1909 and sank in 1912.
  • Cubs fans could not enjoy a baseball game while sipping on a cold beer for 13 years. Prohibition started in 1920 and ended in 1933.
  • The NBA, NHL, and NFL were formed during the 108 year drought. Chicago teams have already won a title in each of the 3 leagues.
  • A total of 44 combined Summer and Winter Olympic Games have been played.
  • The US fought in WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, Iraq War, and Afghanistan War.
  • Flagpoles were placed on the Wrigley Field roof to hold all of the team’s future World Series pennants, which have since rusted and been taken down.

It looks like the crew at Wrigley Field needs to put up some new polls for the new World Series pennant. The Cubs are an extremely young team and are expected to win many more World Series in the following years to come.
