left aardvark, right anteater

Have you ever wondered what the difference was between an aardvark and anteater? Are you curious about what each one looks like and how they are similar and different? Look no further for a handy guide to these mammals.

1. These animals are not related and actually live on different continents, the aardvark in Africa and the anteater in Central and South America.

2. Aardvarks burrow underground to sleep during the day, while anteaters just sleep wherever they feel like.

3. Aardvarks have coarse hair and anteaters have bushy thick hair.

4. Aardvarks have sharp teeth and anteaters have no teeth.

5. Both enjoy eating termites and ants

6. Aardvark means “earth pig” in Afrikaans even though it is not related to pigs. Instead, aardvarks resemble more of a hairless rabbit. Anteaters have been commonly mistaken for bears because of their long hair.

Even though these animals don’t have huge differences, they should not be mistaken. They aren’t even related despite how similar they may appear to be.
