Book Review: We Were Liars - A book full of lies

Samantha Kramer, Staff Writer

I want to be able to describe what this book was about, but the inside flap says if anyone asks to lie about the end. It’s one of those books that even if I tried to describe it, I couldn’t. My review wouldn’t make any sense.

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart is a book that seems relatively normal when you start reading, but it’s most definitely not. Once you start reading it, you won’t want to stop for anything. It will mess with your mind and leave you questioning everything you just read. You won’t be able to tell what is true and what isn’t, if the end is the truth, or if the book was all a lie. To be honest, I’m still not sure of the truth.

The book features an unreliable narrator, Cadence, who had an accident that injured her brain and memory. She doesn’t remember how it happened, just that she was swimming in the ocean off of her family’s private Beechwood Island and didn’t bring a towel. Her family and cousins all know, but refuse to tell her the truth. It’s something she has to figure out on her own.

Every year, her family, cousins, and grandparents return to the island. During the summer when she is seventeen, Cadence finally discovers the truth to the Beechwood Island and her accident. I would tell you what happens, but then I’d have to lie.
