The majority of this year’s freshman class gave up 4 days of their summer vacation in July to attend the AMHS Summer Scholars Institute.  This event was sponsored by the Academic Magnet Foundation and PIE (Parents in Education).  Each day students were exposed to 40 minutes of 5 different academic subjects.  Ms Benton and Ms Lankford led students in discussion of summer reading and reviewed basic essay writing.  Mr. McCormick and Ms. Eicher shared Lab Survival Skills using a Science Olympiad activity and introduced the ever daunting Lab Notebook. Ms. Orr and Mr. Stackhouse revealed the secrets of writing DBQs and how to analyze a primary document. Ms. Renes and Ms McIntyre reviewed Algebra I and Ms. Colon and Dr. Altman helped students review their Spanish and French skills.

After lunch students were allowed to relax from academics and try some team building skills. These were led by Coach Williams, Ms Merriman and Mr. Aburrow.   Team building included volleyball, soccer, kickball, and a Low Ropes Course.

Overall, the institute was deemed a success – hopefully the class of 2018 is ready to survive Magnet.
