Prom: Most Stressful Time of the Year

Prom: Most Stressful Time of the Year

Kara Schwacke and Sohan Kotecha

Prom – a formal gathering of high school upperclassmen. A night filled with joy, friendship, dancing, and packed photobooths. But the months before prom can consist of extreme stress. A study of 144 seniors at AMHS asked what the most stressful thing in December was. 3% reported college applications, 2% said lunch, and a whopping 94% claimed that preparing for prom was the most traumatic event of 2016. Of those 94%, 90% were stressed about coming up with a perfect promposal.
The “promposal” or an elaborate asking of one’s date to prom has become increasingly popular in recent years. When teachers were asked about their prom experiences Mrs. Lankford reminisced on her high school days saying “I don’t remember how he asked, nice John Nicks, cute red hair freckley shy boy. We went out a few times before prom, he didn’t dance, we had a good time. White dress pink sash we kinda matched. I didn’t go to a prom house, but people rented hotel rooms”.When others were asked Ms. Hoofsttetter said “He lived out of town but came over and had dinner, we went to prom downtown, took pictures and left”, as for the grand promposal she said “I asked him to prom”.
Although in teacher’s years of high school, promposals may not have been that common of an occurrence, these days it is rare to find a couple without a great story to tell. The Talon reporters did some in depth research into some AMHS students’ proposals and this is what they found:
Kevin: Went to track practice and brought her flowers and chocolates.
Kara: “Oh we’re going to prom”
Sohan: “Im unoriginal so let’s go to prom”
Mrs. English: “Oh we’re going to prom together”
Lucia:” We don’t have prom”
Potter: Talent show over a shoutout
Conor Coleman: Single independent man who don’t need no woman
Carter: “Scavenger Hunt, I left a note in her car telling her to go to starbucks and had them write on the cup for Emma and next clue was on the mailbox. I then told her to go to the dock, and stood there and said “Prom?”
Coler: Had Officer Snipes get a fake backpack, took the girl aside. She started crying (whoops) with a note in it that said go to prom with me.
Trevor: Backflip

Prom is an important event for all seniors. We encourage all of you to attend this once in a lifetime event, even if you are stressed about finding a cool way to ask out your date. As long as you put your heart into it, they will love it.
