Processed Views: Western Landscapes Recreated

Barbara Ciurej and Lindsay Lochman collaborate on photographic projects. They are interested in the story telling potential of photography to show “the edge of the heroic and the commonplace.” Their most recent project Processed Views is focused on interpreting the frontier of industrial food production and the show the intersection between nature and technology. They were inspired by Carleton Watkin’s photos of the Old West. His photographs encouraged people to move to the open lands of endless possibilities. Because of this most of his photos were commissioned by the railroad, mining, milling and lumber companies who wanted people to move to the West. His images upheld the Manifest Destiny notion of the 19th century. Some of Barbara Ciurej and Lindsay Lochman’s other collaborative projects include Pondering Love as Food and Watch Me Grow.

Below are some of the photos by Carleton Watkin that inspired the Processed Views photos which follow.
